Tips on improving mental health (coming from a Junior in High School)

Remove toxic people from your life

I personally had a hard time coping with stress because I was not only stressed about my classes, but also the relationship with my friends. Even if some people were hurting me mentally, I kept them by my side and tried to be considerate no matter what. I was being considerate to people who did not bother to be considerate to me. This caused my self-esteem and confidence to deteriorate greatly. After I removed those people from my life and kept distance between myself and them, I feel much greater and happier overall. I now find joy in the smallest of events and enjoy life.

Stop comparing yourself with others

Especially in high school, it is easy to compare my life with others’ lives. However, I learned that there is no one living an easy life. Just as no one will exactly understand what is going on in my life, I would not be able to understand other people’s lives so I shouldn’t automatically assume that my life is so much harder than others’. No one wants to show off the hardships that they are facing, which is why it may seem like their lives are perfect, whereas in reality, they could be going through the hardest of times. This leads onto the next point which is to

Take Social Media breaks

Everyone has different sides to them; sides that they are willing to show and sides that they want to hide. Everything that goes on social media are just the happy moments of life. However, it is easy to be convinced that people are living their best lives just by looking at their posts. This could lead us to compare our lives with others, not considering the amount of hardships the others face behind the scenes. Yes, social media can be addictive and hard to delete. However, it is a great help to the mental health deleting it for a short period of time once in a while.

Have some alone time

Yes, being outside socializing is always fun. Feeling like you’re a part of something greater is always even better. However, there always needs to be a time where we take a time to reflect on ourselves and who we are. Before meeting new people, having a clear idea of who we are and learning to love ourselves is crucial. Otherwise, it is easy to feel lost and go through an existential crisis when meeting people. Always make sure to take a time to heal before making plans with people because no matter what, nothing is bound to be perfect and if we do not have a strong foundation before we face the problems, it is easy to be taken aback.
